Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is filled with 28 vibrant, eager learners. They come from a community filled with poverty, homelessness, and crime, but they are filled with hope. These children attend a public school in an industrial and commercial community of New York City. The school has a high African-American and Hispanic population. Many of the students have parents who have, newly immigrated to the United States from Africa or Mexico. The rest of the student body consists of students whose families have lived in the community for generations. These students are motivated to achieve the American dream and make their families proud of their achievements.

My Project

Reading is a necessity to learning. A classroom full of books gives children the reading exposure they need to be successful. Books on students' reading levels provide opportunities for students to read books that are appropriate for them at their individual stage of reading development. This leveled classroom library will give students access to books that they can read. These books will help my students feel comfortable with reading by meeting them where they are. This leveled classroom library will help my students select books that are appropriate based on their reading level. The books in our leveled library are old and many are damaged or have torn or missing pages. New leveled books will peak their interest and possibly encourage them to read more. Privacy shields allow students to have a private place to read and enjoy their books.
