My students need books on their reading levels with characters that are familiar to them. We need books such as Baseball ballerina, Where is Max and more.

My Students
My sixteen first grade students live in a rural community in South Carolina. Our Title One school has 528 students, with 54% of the children qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Eight boys and eight girls help to create an active and fun learning environment in our classroom. Because there is a strong connection between independent reading and reading achievement, it is my job to create not only interest, but motivation, to read for all of the children. Each week my students have the opportunity to earn "Flashlight Friday". They earn letters for doing great things in the classroom as well as all over the school. If they earn all of the letters to spell flashlight by our independent reading time on Friday they get to turn out the lights and read with flashlights.
My Project
My first grade students lack self-confidence as they are learning to read. Reading books with familiar characters that are on their reading level can be very beneficial, and the children's motivation to read is greatly impacted. Having familiar and favorite characters can give the students a new purpose to read. A variety of books on their reading level to choose from will give the students an opportunity to select their favorite book, and it will increase the likelihood that the students will stay engaged in their reading.
These books will not only give the students opportunities to read, but it will help them become fluent, expressive, and successful readers.
