My first grade students lack self-confidence as they are learning to read. Reading books with familiar characters that are on their reading level can be very beneficial, and the children's motivation to read is greatly impacted. Having familiar and favorite characters can give the students a new purpose to read. A variety of books on their reading level to choose from will give the students an opportunity to select their favorite book, and it will increase the likelihood that the students will stay engaged in their reading. These books will not only give the students opportunities to read, but it will help them become fluent, expressive, and successful readers.
