Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am an ESL teacher in an urban classroom in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have many students who are at a low reading level, but we do not have many books in our school that are both at their level and at their interest level. I also have many newcomers who would like bilingual books!

My students come from various backgrounds.

We have students from Mexico, El Salvador, Columbia, Congo, Kenya, Vietnam, and other countries. Some students were born in the United States but their families do not speak any English. We have four students who just came to America this year and some who have only been here for two or three years.

My Project

My students will be reading books and using AR (a reading program online) to take tests to assess their reading comprehension. Every month, the students are given a school-wide goal to reach on how many AR points they earn. The books will also be used in our ESL lessons to teach phonics, fluency, and comprehension.

More books will give the students more opportunities to read and grow in their English abilities.

Right now we don't have many books at their level, so the students can't understand what they're reading about.
