Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

25 high-energy very motivated, happy, little 2nd graders inhabit my classroom. The "Read to Self" time is one of the most popular times of the day. I have a limited number of leveled books in my reading center. These leveled books will help provide more reading enjoyment for my voracious readers.

My students are very inquisitive children who are motivated to learn.

They love to work with manipulatives to solve math problems, they cheer when when it is writing time and LOVE to read. My school is located in a middle to low socioeconomic area. The teachers are highly trained in differentiated instruction and use cooperative learning structures to actively engage the students. All teachers and staff members are caring and help foster good citizenship through positive interaction and setting and modeling "CUBS" expectations. Our mission statement is to provide a safe, diverse, and engaging learning environment in which all students reach their full potential. Our school vision is to provide extraordinary learning for all.

My Project

In my classroom our reading block is divided into parts. One part is called the daily 5. During this time the students rotate to different literacy stations. the stations are called "Word Work," "Listen to Reading," "Read to Someone," "Computer Literacy Skills," and "Read to Self." While the students are engaged in various literacy stations, I am able to conduct small groups to help improve their reading skills. My students love when it is their turn to go to the "Read to Self" station. They love to read. However, my classroom library is very limited. The leveled books and bins will bring more excitement to the "Read to Self" time, give a new variety of books to the students, and help give an organizational system that makes choosing books at individual levels easier.

The books purchased through this project will create more excitement during our reading block.

Since my classroom library does not have a large collection of books, this project will improve my classroom by giving a big collection of literature available to my students, help build reading stamina, help create life time readers, and give an organizational system to make choosing literature easier and more enjoyable.
