Books, Books, Books! Help Build Our Readers Workshop
My students need books such as The Mercy Watson Collections and the Scaredy Squirrel series. They need great read-aloud texts and a variety of levels and genres of books in their hands to help improve literacy in our classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot un-educate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. - Cesar Chavez
In my school and classroom, children are taught through two languages (Spanish and English).
The majority of our students are English language learners that come from a low-income background. Regardless of this, they succeed to their greatest potential each day. I find that the more they are held to a higher standard the more they break every barrier standing in their way. I believe that instilling a love for reading will set these children up for success far beyond their first grade year.
My Project
We are a school that is still growing. Each year we will add one grade to our elementary school. Last year, was our first year to have a first grade, and this coming year is the first year for our second grade and so it will continue each year until we are full. As a fairly new school, we need supplies, but more importantly, we need books in our classroom. I want the children to fall in love with a book that speaks to them. To fully teach all of the comprehension skills necessary to read across genres, we need a variety of read-aloud material, shared reading texts, and books on the children's levels. I would love to let the children "shop" for books each week so that we are constantly changing out the books in their book bags. These books will go home and come back as well. This is very important for success, as many of the children do not have books at home or parents who are able to read with them.
Giving children the tools they need to grow a passion for reading, is something that I value greatly.
I know that instilling love of learning through reading will give them a confidence that will stay with them throughout school. I also know that with these books, they will become incredibly strong in their first language, helping to foster independence and growth in their second language.
