Books, Books, BOOKS! for Struggling Readers

My students need 1-3 copies eacah of 40 book titles by Sharon Flake, Sharon Draper and Walter Dean Myers.

This project is fully funded

I teach English and Reading to high school students with special needs in a high-needs urban area.

Many of my students are struggling readers, who find reading difficult and boring. The school has 30 minutes of scheduled independent reading time every day in English classes and advisory, but many of the students cannot take advantage of this opportunity because they can't find books they want to read. Many of the students do not have any books at home and have to rely on the school's selection.

I have selected 40 books at various levels that students will love! They are by students' favorite authors: Sharon Draper, Sharon Flake and Walter Dean Myers. Some of these books have been specifically requested by students; all of the books will be in high demand. Struggling readers will love the high-interest, lower-level books by these excellent authors. Once they read one, they will be hooked! This will motivate students to read the more difficult books by the same authors.

With books they can't wait to read, students will look forward to and love reading. They will overcome some of their struggles with this motivation and become better readers in the process. Improving their literacy skills will help my students be successful in high school and prepare for college and for life. Thank you for giving this opportunity to the students who need it the most!
