Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a second grade teacher in a Title I rural school district. There are only two other second grade classrooms at my school and less than five hundred students in our entire K-6 setting. Many of my students leave school at the end of the day and spend time with a caregiver other than a parent. Many don't even live with a parent, rather are being raised by another family member. When they do go home, many of my students don't have a single book to read - let alone a book they are reading for enjoyment.

Cassandra Clare said that one must always be careful of books and what's inside them, for words have the power to change us.

Since many of my students won't have examples of good books or good characters at home, I'm looking to provide them with the best books possible. Books that will change them for the better, books that will push our classroom community and atmosphere to it's absolute very best!

My Project

The books that I have chosen for this project come recommended by elementary teachers from all over the nation! We want to add books to our classroom library and to my read-aloud stack that are meaningful and make a difference within our classroom. Requested titles include Be Kind, Pig the Winner, Train Your Dragon To Be Kind, Me....Jane, Ruby's Wish, The Invisible Boy, Winners Never Quit, Each Kindness, and the What Was, Who Are, and Where Is series.

Our classroom is a community built around the six pillars of character and these books teach/reinforce just that!

Books about fairness, caring, trustworthiness, perseverance, and respect have been chosen to set the example for how my 7 and 8-year-old students can live their best lives and be the best classmates possible!
