My Students

Our school provides a warm and caring environment as every teacher believes that every student matters. We believe that reading is the pathway to success and that every student needs quality literature, fiction and non-fiction, in their hands. Reading is a fundamental skill that leads to many opportunities for changing the world.

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.” — Frederick Douglass.

Our school provides support to over 337 students and families. We have a mixture of Hispanic, Asian. White, and American Indian families living in our district. Our classes write vision statements at the beginning of the year and students in one class believe that "We come to school to learn by growing our knowledge in math and reading and to have fund with friends by being kind."

My Project

The books that I am requesting will be used to fill our book vending machine at our school. Students receive book vending coupons for a variety of reason from all staff members. From being a good school citizen or helping our school be safe or being a kind are just a few ways students earn a coupon and are then able to "purchase" a book from the book vending machine. Students are able to choose books, which will help them love independent reading time at home and at school.

The idea of "choice" for what book to read is fundamental to getting students excited about reading.

Our students missed out during COVID the ability to pick a book they wanted to read and the comfort of having choice of reading material.

Book choice is connected to all Nevada ELA standards. From RL.3 to RI.5 to just the fundamental right to choose what interests us as readers.
