My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, I know that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Most of our families live day by day; their sole focus is surviving through to the next day. They stress about where they are going to sleep at night and when they will have their next meal. That being said, education is understandably not always their primary focus. Yet, my students still show up every day and give it their all. They are a brave bunch that never stops fighting to be the best they can be.

My students are eager to learn despite the hardships they face on a daily basis.

Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten grade level, and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. Even though I'm not able to change their home lives, I can certainly help change their experiences during the school day. By creating this project, I'm hoping to inspire my students to become lifelong learners.

My Project

By providing my students with these books, they will be able to engage with culturally responsive texts. The books that I am requesting will expand our classroom library to include high-interest texts that will not only allow my students to see themselves reflected in literacy but also learn about other cultures and disabilities. So often, our books only represent dominant American culture, but these books will offer engaging stories that represent an abundance of cultures and promote inclusion.

My students need access to culturally responsive texts that represent their own cultures and communities.

With the addition of these books, my students will learn about the rich history and traditions of various cultures. These books will provide my students with the opportunity to explore the world and learn about diversity and inclusion. My hope is that my students will be inspired by the characters in these books and develop a sense of acceptance for all.
