Help me give my students books to read within my classroom as well as to take home to break the "vocabulary gap" and further their ability to comprehend what they read.
I work in a elementary school that is located in a very rural area. Many of my students come from low socioeconomic families. Studies show that children from lower income homes may hear 30 million fewer words by age three and that has an negative effect on their reading comprehension ability in later grades.
As a fifth grade teacher I am still battling the "vocabulary gap," and this lack of vocabulary leads to lower scores on reading assessments due to a lack of reading comprehension.
The key to building this vocabulary is to provide students with opportunities to read a variety of books. My students are blessed with a county that values 21st century learning and we are 1:1 with iPads. Students have access to various resources to read online at school, but they are unable to take their iPads home to read at night.
My Project
My students need a wide selection of books to read in order to build their vocabulary to further their ability to comprehend text. I have been trying different reading strategies and even implemented a 20 book challenge to engage my students to read. Now I need to provide a variety books so that they can complete the challenge and practice their reading strategies.
My classroom library must be full of vocabulary rich books on a variety of topics that will interest my students.
The more that they read the more exposure they will have to vocabulary that they must have in order to be successful on the required fifth grade assessments. The collections I have chosen are recommended by Scholastic and will meet the reading interests of my 5th grade students.
