Books, Books, and More Books - Oh My!

My students need books, books, and more books! They also need a bookshelf and some bins to store their future books!

My Students

The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. The beloved Dr. Seuss quote above is well known for good reason - the more our kids read, the better readers and writers they become. To read more, our classroom needs more books!

It's hard to describe the "typical" student in my classroom.

We have one of the most diverse districts in the state, meaning that we have a HUGE range of readers. Our kids come from a variety of backgrounds, socioeconomically, culturally, racially. My students are from every walk of life--children of recent immigrants, children of university professors, children of homeless families, children of hardworking blue-collar families. Half of our students receive free/reduced school lunch. Many students are learning English as a second language. Every teacher at our elementary school of almost 400 students is dedicated to the achievement of our students who struggle the most while at the same time challenging every student to do their best learning. As a result, we need a lot of books to meet that goal of every student having a high-interest "just right" book that they love.

My Project

Our current classroom library that we inherited consists of a lot of old leftover books that don't always interest my students. I want them to LOVE reading with a passion and to develop skills that will carry them into the future. It is critical that we have a large selection in our classroom library to ensure that every student is engaged and progressing. Please help! I have requested a huge variety of books that will allow students to experience many genres. Our class contains readers that are between 1st and 6th grade levels so it is crucial that we have books to match! I've included both fiction and nonfiction, with multiple subgroups and levels to ensure a diverse and exciting library for my students. I picked leveled sets from AKJ Books because it was the most economical way to receive the maximum amount of books!

My kiddos are voracious readers and we still don't have enough books!

When I asked my students, "what can your teacher do to help you be successful this year?", the majority of them answered with "leveled books" and "a bigger library". My kids are motivated, determined, and excited by reading. I want to continue to nurture my skilled readers by giving them more books!
