My Students

Did you know that books in homes equals success in school? It's true. Research says that success in school can be predicted, in part, by the number of books in a home. Help 44 children put this to the test as they begin their own home library. We'll build bookcases, you help supply the books!

Our fifth grade students live and go to school in eastern Maryland.

We are a K - 8 school, with two classes at each grade level. Seventy percent of our students either receive reduced or free lunch, and because of that we are considered a high poverty school. Our students are like kids all over the country (except of course that we're Ravens fans) - bright, funny, curious, imaginative - all the things you want in a ten year old! Many of our students don't have all the opportunities more affluent children enjoy. Books and bookcases should be standard equipment in every child's room. Please help us make this possible for 44 kids.

My Project

This project was inspired by an article in the New York Times that cited the direct relationship between children that live in homes with at least 500 books and greater success in school. This project hopes to begin to address that issue for our students. Through other funding each student will build their own 2' x 3' two shelf bookcase. With the funding from Donors Choose each of our 44 students will receive 3 books (with a variety to choose from) to begin their own in-home library.

Helping a child become a competent reader is one of the greatest pleasures imaginable.

If anything tops that it would be knowing that they are going to be lifelong readers. Reading is essential, it's that simple. To be illiterate is to be without choice. Please help us provide the gift of books, and life long learning, for 44 incredibly deserving inner city children. Thank you!!
