My Students

Our school serves 75 English Language learners, 625 students of color, 90 children with disabilities, 10 children in foster care, and 20 students experiencing homelessness. The cultures and situations our students come from are vast and complicated. We have a number of families who are refugees and even more students whose families are experiencing unemployment or regular work as migrant workers.

School is a safe place for many of our students, the one place they can be carefree and inquisitive.

My students enjoy using technology integrated lessons to help them meet their grade level standards. Technology also allows our students with special needs demonstrate their knowledge and abilities. Using technology in the classroom has proven to be a true victory for everyone involved!

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. My classroom is also a very diverse group this year. I believe it's a great idea to use materials in class with characters that my students can relate to. The Watson's Go to Birmingham-1963 is just the novel to do this. A class set will allow us to enjoy this amazing book together. Bean bags will give them the opportunity to use flexible seating and have a quiet place to enjoy the book.

Growing plants inside a terrarium is something my class will enjoy.

We read a book where the main character was growing items inside a terrarium in his room. Having my students follow is a great way to make a connection to that text.
