Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My low-income, 90% free and reduced lunch, Title I middle school students live in an urban, poverty-driven neighborhood of Orange County, California. Despite these circumstances, my students show up in spite of any challenges they may be experiencing in their lives, and they work hard to achieve by using a growth mindset and persevering. We are a Title I school, but my scholars don’t let that stop them from achieving their goals and overcoming any obstacles which are before them.
My Project
We will back to in-person learning this fall, and I want to bring new books while also providing a welcoming place to read in my classroom. I lost many books when I sent them home before schools closed, and I would like to be able to continue to provide access to students checking out books from my classroom library.
The bean bag chairs will provide a warm, welcoming place where my students can read these culturally relevant books, that they can also see themselves in.
Time spent holding and reading a book was lost for my students while they learned from home, as they only had access to digital books. We all know the power of a good book, and this project will help bring contemporary books into their hands and provide cozy chairs to the reading space.
