In our high performing community, our students "do school," and care greatly about getting good grades, but often miss out on meaningful learning in the process. More specifically, many of them have lost their love of reading. They view reading as a boring chore, one that they do begrudgingly, or even worse, don't do at all.
My students crave choice and independence in their learning.
I believe they need more choice in what they read and study, to entice them to be lifelong readers and learners. Also, as in any classroom, I have a huge range of reading abilities. By giving them a choice, I can better differentiate instruction and use reading conferences to make sure each student has a book that works for him or her.
My Project
In these unique and trying times, everyone has had to adapt to our new normal. As an English teacher, getting my students to read is one of my most important roles, and I refuse to let this go, even though it will be much harder to get books to students this year.
The books from this project will all be added to my classroom library for students to browse remotely, and then pick up at school on designated days.
They will be able to see the titles of everything I have, fill out a form telling me what they want to read, and then I will be able to pull and label books for them to pickup.
I really believe these titles are essential additions to my library because they represent a variety of voices and identities so that all students can find characters they identify with. Additionally, students can read stories about characters or by authors with different identities than their own, thus building understanding and empathy.
