My students need relevant and new books for our classroom library that allows them to become passionate readers, find themselves in books and support their developing identities.
Highly verbal and active are two words I would use to describe my learners. I teach at a diverse gifted and talented school in St. Paul, MN. My school serves students in grades K-8, allowing students to maintain connections with staff and peers over a long period of time.
My students are ravenous readers and I would like to maintain this momentum by being able to offer them the most current literature that allows them to see themselves in what they are reading.
We aim to read forty books each year. To meet this goal, we need to have a lot of high interest books in our classroom library.
My Project
Our classroom library is filled with old favorites. While I have been adding titles to our library that represent my students identities over the years, we really would benefit from a large influx of books at one time. What better time to do this than at the beginning of the school year to set a positive tone and build excitement for reading. The more students read, the stronger readers they become.
I want to be sure that my students are able to see themselves, their experiences and possibilities for their futures in what they read.
Publishers have been working hard at making sure there are good stories out there that represent the diversity of experiences of todays readers. I want to take advantage of this for my students.
I would like to start the new school year off with new titles that they have not read before. My plan is to have a display fo new books wrapped like gifts on the first day of school. We will unwrap them and build excitement about them over the course of the first week and add them to out library, unless they get snatched up by a ravenous reader first.
