My Students

My students and I have grown so much from the ups and downs of remote learning. We learned how to be "classroom ready" for our Google Meet sessions. We bonded over our daily digital Morning Meetings. We embraced sharing our work on Seesaw, our digital platform. I recorded lessons at home to share with students as they navigate learning new information. Students have developed tools to share their learning through text, visuals, and video recordings.

Remote learning has taught us much about our own ability to adapt and the importance of staying connected.

Through it, all students and their families have been willing to try new things, troubleshoot technology challenges, and work hard to stay engaged.

My Project

One challenge I face through distance learning is how to keep my readers engaged and connected. When Stephen King famously said, "Books are uniquely portable magic", I am not sure he had distant learning in mind. But I have seen how kids lean into the screens to get a better look as a read them a picture book on a Zoom call. I hear the giggles as I read a classroom favorite to eager listeners on our Google Meet. I see the thoughtful reflections students post after they view a recorded read aloud.

It feels like the magic of the book travels the distance to bring my readers together once again.

So although I cannot gather my students to the rug to enjoy and learn from a beautiful picture book, I know the power a good book. It can bring people together. It can make you feel connected to someone who might have gone unnoticed. Sharing a book can make you laugh in difficult times. So, yes, Mr. King, I believe in the magic of books and thank goodness that magic is portable in these unprecedented times of remote learning.
