This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all.
- Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
So many of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books.
We want children to look forward to reading.
We want them to pick up a book and be transported to a magical place. By having a set time for reading updated and interesting books, my students can achieve at a higher level throughout the content area. Having independent reading helps them too.
We are an inner city Title 1 school. The majority of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. My students depend on the classroom library for their independent reading books. Our school funding is at an all time low this year. Adding new books to the classroom library, sadly enough, is not a priority. It is imperative to use books as a motivational tool for my students. They need that challenge. By having this classroom library, my students will look forward to their reading time. Instead of being bored by uninteresting books, they will be inspired to read the whole list of books.
My Project
The students will use the materials every day. The books will be a "stepping stone" to daily success. I will be able to see not only an improvement in their reading level but also in their attitude and enthusiasm towards reading. My students will be able, through reading, to build up their self confidence. They will learn about characters and their experiences. Important skills like drawing conclusions and restating the main idea will be developed along with many other reading skills. As they choose books for their book reports, they will find success in writing about the characters and sharing favorite parts of the book with their classmates.
This donation will help my classroom in an educational and enriching way.
As a teacher for 16 years, I have seen how important it is to offer my students books that will interest them. I want them to pick up another book and another book. Reading is a lifelong experience, and I can see my students developing this love of reading
