My Students
The statistics- 89% African American and 68% free or reduced lunch.
The facts- My students are amazing!
They are creative and inquisitive. They want to learn and to get the most out their resources. They also need some help (incentives) to get them to read quality or challenging material, instead of playing video games or playing on social media- just like any middle school student!
As middle school students, they need guidance making good decisions. From the moment they walk into my library, they know that I will help them with their problems and to find something to read that they can relate to. Also, the possibility of winning a prize doesn't hurt.
My Project
My 8th grade advanced students would like to enter a "Book Trailer" contest, but to do this, first they have to read the right books! These books are all nominated for the MASL Gateway Award, as the contest is sponsored by that committee.
The right book at the right time can foster a lifelong love of reading for a child or adult; these books are all challenging books which will help my students reach further with their reading.
Then making the book trailer using different web 2.0 tools will entice my students to continue reading. The trailer will then be used for years to come as examples and recommendations for other students. The books will also continued to be used in the library.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
