My students need a class set of Fahrenheit 451 novels in order to challenge their reading, analytical, and vocabulary skills, as well as to enhance their awareness of sociological issues.
Some of my students are quiet and passionate. Some of them are boisterous and reflective. Others are somewhere in between. Regardless of the many adjectives that may be applied to them, each one is an integral part of the collective unit of our class. Each one is my student.
They are unique individuals of diverse backgrounds and abilities who have ideas, feelings, and voices that need to be heard and respected.
Their experiences in class are closely tied to their lives outside of class. Many of them would attest that the most memorable times in class come from those moments where they, regardless of their “labels”, are able to express who they are through their writing, discussions, and projects.
My Project
Students are engaged when it comes to reading about dystopian societies. As my students will endeavor into the society that exists in the classic novel Fahrenheit 451, they will be introduced to a time and place where social issues are not unlike some of the issues that are relevant to them today. And while they will be challenged to analyze the content of the novel, they will also use this novel as the basis for a student-driven group project.
My students will explore how conflicts can drive individuals, groups, and societies to change for the better, not only in stories, but also in real life!
Using the novel as a mentor text, they will identify a real-life cause, issue, or conflict that is important to them and take action! This novel will serve as an inspiration on how they, as individuals, can affect a positive change in the world.
My students will interact with this novel on a daily basis as we study it. To accommodate those students who are auditory learners and where the use of an audio recording of the novel will assist in their reading comprehension, I would also like to provide them with the option to listen to the CD. For each student to have access to this book will be paramount to the skills, knowledge, and experience that they will gain, not only from the novel itself, but also from the real world around them.
