This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in Northern California. I teach 45 energetic first graders from Spanish-speaking homes. The majority qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Some come from difficult circumstances such as broken families, poverty, health issues, learning disabilities, and language or cultural barriers.

My bilingual and bi-literate students come to class excited and eager to participate and become 21st century learners. Each student brings their unique style of learning that enhances our class community.

My Project

Children need books that they can read independently. Having a classroom library of books that students can choose from will help develop a love of reading. Reading on their own will improve comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Choosing from a selection of reading materials will build confidence in making decisions.

When students have an opportunity to choose, they have more ownership in their education and make reading a priority!

Students who connect with meaningful reading materials experience greater reading achievement. Students get excited and want to share what they are reading. Independent reading can lead to book discussions, literature circles, book reports, and writing activities.
