My students are as diverse as they can get. They are a mix of many races and religions. Although 100% of my students get free lunches, they come from a variety of income brackets and financial situations. Even when they walk in our classroom, they are a mix of ability levels, social/emotional maturity, and feelings about school and learning. Above all, they are children who deserve to receive the best education possible. My school is in a very nice neighborhood, so it is often misunderstood in regards to our students needs. The neighborhood has grown past young children. Our students come mostly from run down apartments. Our neighborhood is still very supportive and involved with our school.
Dr. Seuss said, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.” Books are what my students need. Reading is magic and it can teach you much and take you far. My students are learning that and so much more, but they need more access to quality literature. The books I chose fit a range of reading abilities. I tried to select interesting themes and titles to meet their varied interests. My classroom library has been slowly growing over the course of my career, but I’m afraid it hasn’t kept up with demand and that is why I wrote this project. My library needs updating to foster a love of reading in my students.
