Books Are Keys That Open Many Doors

Help me give my students books so they can create a book club within our classroom. These books will not only increase their Lexile level but will cultivate a love of reading.

My Students

Jessie Owens said, "We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” I love teaching my students! Their thirst for learning makes me glad that I became a teacher. I am a 7th-grade special education Language Arts resource teacher. My students have various learning disabilities and we use many different learning strategies in order to learn. Our class motto is, "Even though we learn differently, it does not mean we can't learn."

My students believe that there is no obstacle they cannot overcome.

I am about empowering them and helping them to become independent thinkers and learners. There is not an instructional day that I can think of where they have not given me their all. Even during this difficult time in our nation, they have not missed a day of class or failed to do an assignment. Their dedication to learning is inspiring.

My Project

As Dr. Seuss said, "Reading can take you to places you have never been before." There is no other skill that is more important to learn than reading. Students must not only know how to read but they must have a fondness for reading. One way that I can cultivate a love of reading in my students is to create a book club in my classroom. Book clubs allow students to interact with one another in an enjoyable way around texts.

By funding our project, you will not only increase students’ Lexile levels, but also make them better writers, and you will ultimately increase their overall academic performance.

However, in order to create a book club, you need books, and not just any books. The books I have chosen will engage my students and allow them to see themselves within the text. My goal is to create passionate readers through independent reading.
