This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Last year, Chicago Public Schools rolled out new, free curriculums for language arts, math, science, and social studies. While each of these curriculums has many great aspects, they are lacking in others. For example, the language arts curriculum uses many culturally-relative, high-interest books. However, these books have not been provided to us.
While many of the required books can be found on YouTube, I am a strong believer that having access to the actual book is always better.
With the real book, it is much easier to pause, discuss, and reread as necessary. With the real book, we are better able to model good reading behaviors -- when using YouTube videos, we have to hope that the reader does a decent job. Also, if we have the actual books available to our students, they are able to reread them on their own after we are finished using them as a class.
