In our English classroom, we have really been building ourselves as a community of readers and writers. The back of our classroom has beautiful wall-to-wall cabinets that are filled with as many high-interest books as we can get our hands on. My students love the days when we take the bins out of the cabinets, spread books across the tables, and search for that next great read.
True magic are the days when you walk in, and there's pure silence, as each student is totally engaged in a book he or she loves.
Some sprawl across the carpet, others choose to stay seated in desks, and others grab a beanbag or squeeze into a plush chair to enter that reading zone they've been learning to love.
In our small farming community, we still have a ton of diverse readers that enter through my 9th and 10th grade high school classes. We draw inspiration from our independent books or other quality texts to practice different writing styles, and we spend each day engaged in as much reading and writing as we can fit in.
My Project
The most effective way to get children to read more is to simply surround them with books. They need to see shelves packed with high-quality literature. Nothing makes a kid want to pick up a book and start reading more than having high-quality literature right there in front of them. That statement bears repeating...
Nothing makes a kid want to pick up a book and start reading more than having high-quality literature right there in front of them.
Mounds of research has shown that students will read more when they are immersed in a culture of books and given the time for reading. And my students' classroom culture of reading is thriving.
But more beautiful, amazing stories are published every day. Help us to update our classroom library, and give my readers more amazing literature. The list of books has been curated to match the preferences of the readers in my class: from those "great new books" my voracious readers will devour, to some engaging graphic novels my most hesitant readers won't be able to resist. Thank you for your consideration in our project!
