Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom serves students with a range of disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairment, Other Health Impairments and students with multiple disabilities. Our school is located in a low income area. Our students receive both breakfast and lunch for free within our scheduled day. They come from many different home backgrounds and many are learning English as a second language, already speaking Spanish, Karen, or Vietnamese at home!

For students with disabilities, our "Learning Center" is a safe, comfortable place for them to be engaged and get excited about learning!

My Project

Special education teachers are expected to deliver quality instruction in core subjects without the requisite tools to teach our students. We develop a lot of our own curriculum along with classroom materials and manipulatives to provide differentiated individualized instruction. I have been fortunate to start a leveled library based on what retiring teachers have left behind on a table in our prep room.

My students need books that they can get excited about reading and are leveled to their ability!

Rereading definitely has its place in balanced literacy but we are tired of the same old few books and borrowing. My students deserve materials to support their learning in our resource room as they have in their general education classroom. They are improving their skills in a supportive environment, where they aren't only being presented with grade level content which is frustrating for emerging readers.
