One way that my school encourages student voice/choice and increased engagement is through student lunch groups. One of our student-led lunch groups, Black Student Union (BSU), meets weekly with the mission to educate and empower all students of color, while focusing specifically on the experiences of Black students within our school and community. As with all of our student lunch groups, allies and supporters of all racial backgrounds are welcome to participate.
Our Black Student Union members are planning a virtual performance for National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) in February, which will be attended by parents, students, and staff.
Our BSU members are excited to put this presentation together. They have participated in our weekly meetings without fail, brainstorming ideas for how to make the performance happen in a virtual environment. Each student has committed to taking an active role in creating a vision and planning action steps. Without a doubt, our BSU members are eager to take on this leadership role with the school community.
My Project
As part of hosting NAAPID this February, along with celebrating Black History month, our BSU will be putting together a virtual program of performances that highlights Black music, literature, and historical figures. The program will be shown to parents, students, and staff so that our entire school community can learn more about Black history.
Having access to posters, books, and activities that center on the Black experience will give our students the materials they need to create their performances.
Students will have the opportunity to record book reviews, informing others of culturally specific books that will be newly available through our media center. Students can also research the poster subjects and record their findings so that the rest of our community can learn about them.
Once our NAAPID program is complete, our BSU members will be able to keep a copy of the book or poster that they centered their performance on. The duplicate copies of books with be added to our library for all students to access and additional posters will be displayed within the building. This way, all students will benefit year-round from the work that our BSU has done.
