I chose this project for my students as most have severe emotional disorders and lack appropriate social skills to express themselves. All of our students have been through or faced some type of traumatic event during their young life. As a staff, we have been trained in therapeutic strategies in which we strive to meet each of our students' individualized needs.
Due to my students' struggles we have social skill lessons several times a week in which we help them learn how to understand their emotions, understand each other, appreciate each other, and work together.
Even though my students have faced challenges or are facing them, they come in smiling and ready to learn. Due to this we make sure to celebrate each and every success no matter how big or small.
Through these books, games, and social skills lessons, my students will learn how to acquire the social skills needed to help them navigate social interactions, form relationships, and participate actively in our school and community. Building these skills enhances their communication abilities, boosts self-esteem, confidence, build tolerance and kindness for each other.
With these resources we will read one of the books and then we will play one of the social skill games, For example when we read the book "Pause Power: Learning to Stay Calm When Your Buttons Get Pushed" by Jennifer Law and then play the game "Learning Resources Noodle Knockout!" we will practice staying calm, being patient, and teamwork.
These activities will also help build relationships throughout our school and community which are essential lifelong skills.
