Help me give my students fun books and games that will enhance their vocabulary and build their phonics and spelling skills. Manga is really popular with my students, so I made sure to include some!
My English language learners come from all over the world - China, Russia, Mexico, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Jordan, and more! They are funny, creative, intelligent, and motivated. As new students enter middle school in the United States for the first time, they are eager to learn, make new friends, and do well in school.
Playing educational games is a fun way to enhance learning for English language learners.
We learn so much through play, and I would love to incorporate more of it into my classroom. With fun, new games, my students would be super motivated to practice English when they might have otherwise felt self-conscious.
My Project
When it's time to choose books, my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English language learners have to choose from titles like "Three Baby Ducks and Mommy," or "The Playground and Me." While these books are technically on their reading level, they are neither interesting nor stimulating for pre-teens and teenagers.
Having a class set of graphic novels will help my students learn to read with cool literature they are actually excited about.
In addition, there are just days when they've had enough reading in English! On those days I'd love to play fun games that sneak in some learning. Having educational games would make my classroom environment so much more fun and welcoming for students who have the challenge of sitting in an environment that is not in their native language. Games that enhance speaking, reading, phonics, and vocabulary skills would be an awesome addition to my classroom!
