Books and Brushes: Encouraging Literacy through Artistic Expression

Help me give my students reading incentives such as small toys and pencils; and creative outlets through art using markers, crayons, and paint.

My Project

This project will encourage reading growth by rewarding students for their effort and achievement. At the end of each quarter, students who meet their Accelerated Reader (AR) goals will be invited to create a piece of art based on a book they’ve read. This gives them the chance to reflect on the story and express their understanding through visual creativity.

We live in an area where many students are exposed to traumatic experiences and hard home life.

These students find it difficult to focus on academics. Many of my students are reading below grade level, and this impacts more than just their academic progress, it also affects their confidence and their willingness to try. I want to change that by making reading feel exciting and rewarding.

My students are full of potential and creativity. Despite the obstacles they face, they are eager to learn and thrive when given the right encouragement and tools.

Our school serves a diverse community, and many students come from low-income households. Because of this, they often lack access to books, art supplies, and enriching creative experiences outside the classroom. I want to provide a program that supports both literacy and self expression to unlock potential.

Students who come close to meeting their goals will also be recognized with a small toy or trinket to encourage continued effort. Everyone gets a chance to feel proud and motivated, regardless of where they’re starting from.

By tying reading to art using paint, canvas, markers, crayons; and incentives such as fidget toys, we’re helping students connect emotionally with the stories they read—and giving them reasons to keep going. With your support, we’ll turn reading from a struggle into something exciting and meaningful.
