¿Hablas español? My students would proudly scream ¡Sí! From starting with little to no Spanish, my students can now hold basic conversations, order food at a café, describe their classes and hobbies, read novels, and interpret music all in their second language. The Spanish classroom is usually a big fiesta of learning where we watch authentic music videos, read comprehensible novels, complete scavenger hunts, escape from breakout rooms, play human bingo with conversation questions, and more.
Fearless, hardworking, and unflappable, my students embrace the difficulty of learning a second language.
They must ask to use the bathroom in Spanish, interpret teacher instruction in Spanish, and use 100% Spanish on speaking and writing assignments. In the age of a globalized, multilingual society, my students can impact the world as future bilinguals that use their language skills to serve others and foster cross-cultural understanding.
My Project
Boring grammar and rote vocabulary activities? ¡No, gracias! Story-based learning is one of my students' favorite methods of learning Spanish! When students are given fun, relatable stories, they feel empowered to read in their second language. The possibilities for learning are endless - everything from book clubs, reader's theater, writing sequels, conversation questions, and more can be used in conjunction with a good novel in Spanish to inspire students to love the language. Especially during COVID-19, reading has been a safe activity where students can participate from their own seats and receive socio-emotional relief from stressors as they enter the universes of exciting novels! Reading is the perfect escape.
Books and bilingualism are the best combination!
My amigos in 7th and 8th grade are so enthusiastic any time we read. Unfortunately, our classroom library has a very limited amount of books and we do not have enough copies to form small group book clubs for peer reading. With an increased variety of books, I'll be able to further support my students' love for reading as they grow their language skills to change the world as future bilinguals.
