Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in an underserved neighborhood, I know that my students face several challenges both within and outside of the classroom. Unfortunately, most of my students have experienced some form of trauma as a child. They stress about the safety of their families and whether or not they will be able to afford basic necessities each month. Yet, my students still show up every day and give it their all. They are a brave bunch that never stops fighting to be the best they can be.

My students are eager to learn despite the hardships they face on a daily basis.

The majority of the students I serve enter my classroom

years behind in their academic progress. Many struggle with foundational literacy skills and number sense. Despite these challenges, my students continue to preserve and strive to reach academic success. By creating this project, I'm hoping to inspire my students to become lifelong learners.

My Project

By providing my students with these books, they will be able to engage with culturally responsive texts. The books that I am requesting will expand our classroom library to include high-interest texts that will not only allow my students to see themselves reflected in literacy but also learn about other cultures. So often, our books only represent dominant American culture, but these books will offer engaging stories that represent an abundance of cultures and promote inclusion.

My students need access to culturally responsive texts that represent their own cultures and communities.

With the addition of these books, my students will learn about the rich history and traditions of various cultures. The other materials included in this project will be used to help my students who need additional support with reading. My hope is that my students will be inspired by the characters in these books and grow their love of reading.
