My Students

I teach at a Title I school in an underserved part of San Francisco. Many of the students are children of immigrants or live in the neighborhood's low-income housing development.

Though their families often have fewer resources, that doesn't stop my students' desire and ability to learn and achieve!

My students are curious, funny, sweet kids who can't wait to learn in third-grade. They are eagerly learning cursive, mastering their multiplication facts, reading chapter books, investigating live crayfish in science, making stop-motion videos about Native American life, typing up their stories on Chromebooks, and so much more.

My Project

During these turbulent times, children need moments of beauty and inspiration to hold onto. Social-emotional learning is more important than ever. In my (virtual for now) classroom, I want to present my students with words and pictures that can stimulate the brain and soothe the soul. I chose quality picture books that help students connect with their own identity, develop compassion, and appreciate the diversity of people in their communities. These books all have important messages and beautiful illustrations, which will inspire students to write and create their own forms of self-expression.

After reading these books as a class, we will have rich discussions that promote social-emotional learning.

In addition, students will use the stickers and art materials (sent home in learning kits) to decorate their at-home journals and create artwork based on the literature. Please help me provide my students experiences with books and art that nurture their souls!
