This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school with ninety-nine percent of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I am a teacher of students with autism who are amazing! Each is only three or four years old, but is brilliant in his or her own right. Some are very vocal and receive time in the general education classroom.
One has gone from saying three words at the beginning of last school year to speaking in complete sentences.
Others are learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express their needs. I love the way my students work together in play center. I am proud of the way they have welcomed new students into our class!
My Project
My students need books about kids like them. This includes books about African Americans and children with autism.
I think it is important for my students to read about students that look like them and have similar experiences.
Some of the other books provide a child friendly explanation of what autism is.
My Brother, Charlie is a book about Charlie Peete, the son of actress Holly Robinson-Peete. Charlie is a child with autism and the book describes the special relationship between Charlie and his sister. I think this would be a great book for my students to share with their families because it provides information about the unique characteristics of autism and the experience of siblings of those with autism. I am also requesting a book that describes the experiences and value of children from urban backgrounds.
