Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Greetings! I am a first year, 2nd grade teacher in a Title 1 school...that means that my students come from low socio-economic households. Despite these challenges, the students come to school each day eager to learn and take charge of their education. I believe in empowering my students and giving them thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their reading and math skills.

My students CRAVE facts and they are obsessed with informational text. However, the interesting informational text I currently have is all science text. I want to inspire the same interest in social studies, as I have in science, by teaching a biography unit with sets of 2nd grade level, biographical books.

I need biographies in sets of six books so that each table can have a copy of each biography. The students love to reread books we have read together as a class. Having biographical books in sets of six will allow the students to read the information they are interested in, again and again. Also, using this table system allows the students to work in tables to do research. I want to create excitement for social studies, by teaching the students about important Americans, and providing interesting text to read and research from at each table.

Because so much educational focus is on reading and math, many students aren't exposed to science and social studies until the later grades. But 2nd graders are so curious and interested in information. I want to provide my students with the information they crave, while incorporating reading skills and strategies. The students read about social studies and learn reading comprehension skills to process the information. With your help, my students will read to learn about important people in American History...and be inspired to become an important person in American History.
