My Students

I’m a speech therapist at a Title I school in an urban area. I’ve been at the same school for over 25 years and serve over 50 children. Even though my job gets more challenging every year due to my students’ needs continuing to increase, I stay because of all the amazing kids I get to work with.

Even though a large portion of my children can’t speak and have significant physical and medical concerns, every one of them perseveres to find a way to communicate, even if it’s a facial expression or giggle.

They challenge and encourage me every day. But mostly, they make me smile every day, in person and virtually!

My Project

Help me give my students books that have diverse characters and stories to teach about differences and social/ emotional skills. My students with speech and language impairments learn best through hearing stories that target their goals.

Language and literacy are the perfect pair!

Literacy based speech- language therapy allows me to address my students' IEP goals through stories which also supports their academic needs. This makes this project special because it will allow me to develop lessons that target their speech and language needs, diversity, social/ emotional skills, and literacy- all at the same time!
