When my current students peer into the shelves of my classroom library, they see holes in my collections. Many books have not made it back onto the shelves. I imagine these are the most loved books and they are being treasured by former students....at home!
They are from diverse backgrounds and represent 4 continents.
My school, as a whole, is in a low income, inner city neighborhood. As a school, we are working towards improving classroom libraries. It is important to us to have enough titles for all students to be able to bring books home. Some of the titles are special requests from students and some are books I know they will enjoy.
My Project
Independent reading begins at 9:30 and for many students, doesn't last long enough! We read, we share books, we discuss characters, we write about our books, and finally, we moan and groan when it's time to clean up.
These books will help the enthusiasm we have now for reading last for many more months. You will make it possible for students to simply read more. Less time will be spent rummaging through library shelves and more time will be spent curled up in a "comfy spot", reading and thinking about the adventures of Pete the Cat and The Boxcar Children.
When I began teaching, I was bequeathed hundreds of musty and torn classic books from the 60's, 70's, and 80's.
Over time, I have replaced some classics with newer versions and added many new authors. A proper classroom library has numerous genres that appeal to a wide range of interests. While I have begun making strides, your donation will go a long way to make a dream classroom library a reality.
