Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are awesome, rising bilingual 5th graders. These 9 and 10 year olds love competition, surprises and games. They collaborate on creative projects like movies, songs and dances. The generosity they display for each inspires me to push them further in order to accomplish more complex goals together. My students are curious learners who are becoming responsible for themselves as they discover their interests and passions.
My motto is Subimos Juntos.
Together we can and will achieve our goals. We are a low-income, Chicago Public School on the city's southwest side that serves a largely Mexican-American population. As a school we aim to grow students into globally-minded citizens who have passions for justice and service towards others. My students must get the same opportunities as students in others parts of the city. They need our energy and resources in order to get where they deserve to be.
My Project
In 5th grade we start the year with a unit on Identity. Readers will form book clubs where they will read and discuss books with themes of gender, race, and class identity, among others. At the same time students will be navigating through their own identities as they write memoirs and paint a self-portrait. In this project, I am requesting books that meet a wide range of reading levels and that will allow my students to explore literature as well as themselves. Book clubs, which increase engagement and help foster a love for reading, allow students to socialize around literature and genuinely discuss character, craft and theme.
Through problem-solving, young mathematicians persevere through unknown situations and use prior understandings to anchor new learning.
Problem solving lessons rely on large white boards where both students and teachers share their conceptual thinking and display key models. This board will provide a space for the us to have large group discussions and create a focal point for students to push each others' thinking and communicate about math.
