My Project

The Covid-19 Pandemic has had a devastating effect on literacy. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, scores in reading fell by the largest margin in 30 years. I would like to get our students back into the groove of reading by offering incentives like bookmarks, stickers, erasers, PopSockets, and bookish journals. Students would be able to either earn them by reading 10 titles, or win them via a scratch off, if they are so fortunate to find one, discovered in a book they checkout from our library. The top library patron for each quarter will be recognized with a reading reward certificate; and, awarded with an experiental learning experience. The Barnes and Noble gift card will allow students the opportunity to shop in an actual bookstore. On the Reading Interest Inventory issued at the beginning of the year, less than 5% of our students have ever been to a bookstore. Although this may seem trivial to most, I believe that this could be a life changing experience for them. These materials will make a difference in our students' lives because reading improves imagination, develops critical thinking, and reduces stress. In short, they will be smarter, happier, and healthier; this will serve them well in their personal and academic life.

The ultimate goal of this project is to spark or re-ignite a love of literacy in our students.
