My students need to have access to a variety of 150 texts including "Love That Dog" and "Rain School" to facilitate literacy instruction and improve their comprehension with global awareness.
"Intelligence plus character is the real key to education," by Dr. King is a guiding principle that we use to create champions for literacy success. We want to improve students' intelligence through critical thinking and building character through peer collaboration.
Are you pursuing the leader in you?
The students at my school are pursuing the leaders in them. We are a leadership school driven by the Stephen Covey’s (2008) Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. We are a Title I elementary school that is comprised of 450 students (64% white, 24% black, Hispanic 11%, and American Indian Alaska 1%). Not only do students practice leadership habits, they set academic and behavioral goals. Each student creates and maintains a leadership notebook that includes academic data and work samples to keep them abreast of their behavioral and academic progress. Although our school creates a safe and civil community and provides consistent behavioral support, it is experiencing a deficit in creating an effective literacy community that ensures student needs are met. One of the contributing factors of this literacy challenge is the lack of diversity concerning genres that are rigorous in nature, engaging, and possess a sense of global awareness.
My Project
Students can go anywhere with a book. Reading is a pathway to learning that goes beyond the walls of a classroom. The students will be engaged in cooperative learning opportunities that will afford them voice and choice. Students will acquire knowledge through whole group discussions that will extend their perspective through the cultures of other people and languages. The novels and picture books such as The "Hope Chest" and "Esperanza Rising" will allow for exploration and research, expanding their written and oral language skills. Through rich literature, such as "Snakes and Other Reptiles" and "Season of the Sandstorms", students will build their academic vocabulary. The variety of texts will be used to differentiate learning and enhance enrichment experiences through literature circles and guided reading groups. Reading to self and reading to others will strengthen reading stamina, as well as increase fluency rate for building a more confident reader.
Reading opens the window to the rest of the world.
Having access to a variety of literature will strengthen self-confidence to help students realize their talents and foster what they choose to become in the future. It will also bolster critical thinking that will lead to empathy and deeper understanding of how to read different genres for authentic purposes.
