My Students

Reading is a BIG thing in our classroom!! Students LOVE to read! We dedicate thirty minutes, each day, to silent reading. They also read for pleasure at other times during the day, as they finish assignments. Books are BIG deals in our classroom, and unfortunately our books are aging rapidly.

Our Title I school has approximately 550 students enrolled this year.

The school is over 50 years old. We're located in rural Alabama where much of the employment is agricultural or military-related. This is the second year our state educational system has been in pro-ration. There are no funds accessible to teachers for use in purchasing supplies/resources for our classrooms. Our students are predominately from low-income homes. The majority of students are eligible for free and reduced lunches. Many of the students live with only one parent, or are being raised in the homes of relatives.

My Project

The titles we are requesting are high interest, fictional literature. These books will provide countless hours of reading pleasure and enjoyment for my fourth grade students this year. They will also serve next year's class well. Literature allows children to escape their lives and dream of the adventures they read about. Good books teach, inform, and encourage creativity. Books are the a valued commodity within our classroom.

Reading is the key to success in life!

My students rely on my classroom library for a majority of their reading materials. I have personally purchased approximately 80% of the literature in our classroom library. Many of the books are in tatters, having spent time in many hours in the hands of eager readers. Books provide pleasure, while at the same time improving comprehension skills.
