Help me give my students music-based literature to explore how books can connect creativity, movement, and history to music.

My Students
I teach music at a school in St. Louis County that is beautifully diverse.
Coming from many different cultures and backgrounds, my K-5 students bring energy, humor, and passion to our music classroom.
My school is located in a low income/high poverty district, and many of my students are also English Language Learners. Over 500 students come through my classroom each week, and I consider myself fortunate to know so many beautiful faces. My students inspire and invigorate me, and it's amazing that we get to spend our time together making music!
My Project
My students learn best through moving, playing, and creating. In the music classroom, my youngest students use dramatic play and movement exploration to become aware of their surroundings and warm up their bodies for music. My oldest students engage in conversations about social and historical events that have direct ties to music. ALL of my students use their voices and our classroom instruments to improvise and perform melodies and rhythms. Books are the perfect medium and jumping-off point for all of these activities!
Your donation to this project will help my students make powerful connections between music and literature, and allow them to dive deeper while creating, moving, and learning.
Some of these books will give my littlest students opportunities to move their bodies to music, like "How Do You Wokka-Wokka," "Stretch," and "Movement Exploration." Some of these books will give my students opportunities to create music on instruments that aligns with the story, like "Rap a Tap Tap" and "Good News Bad News." Many of these books will give my students representation, like "I Got the Rhythm" and "Miguel and the Grand Harmony." Some of these books will help our class have important conversations, like "Sing a Song," which tells the story of "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
Also, in a COVID-19 world where singing may not be safe for quite awhile, many of these books also provide alternate music activities that can allow for safe social-distancing or enhanced online learning.
These books will help my musicians learn and grow in so many ways. Thank you for your involvement!
