My Students

Our scholars receive free breakfast and free lunch. For many of our scholars, this is the only place they receive a healthy meal. Many of our scholars come from single-family households, without the means to provide their students with the necessary school supplies for the year. Many of our scholars have experienced indescribable hardships and come to school as a safe haven for their personal struggles. Often, some scholars have to walk through areas of violence to and from school.

Despite these hardships, we believe that our scholars deserve the best educational experience and that we need to work together with families, schools and the community, to provide our scholars with the skills necessary to have the most opportunities to thrive.

My Project

Our scholars are eager to fill our bookcase. Each scholar reviewed and searched for books.

They want to have options where characters look like them, have similar experiences and share their voice.

The books selected in this project are considered high interest books for scholars who struggle to read. We have included poetry books that discuss important topics to my scholars. Many of the books are written by African American authors, which is very important to our middle school readers. These authors touch on topics important to our readers. They deal with challenging issues that can help our younger scholars understand their struggles and feel like they are not alone.

We also included many graphic novels which include pictures to help scholars visualize the events in a story.
