Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our campus is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicity. Students come from very diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds, right now we have many cultures and languages represented in our campus, and we are blessed to have them and learn from them every day. In our classroom, we also have students of different ability levels including gifted & talented as well as special education students. Our town is a melting pot of cultures and ethnicity.
Our students inspire me to grow as a teacher and as a human being.
Students love our school and enjoy learning in the environment and classroom culture we have in our room. As a campus, we could not be more blessed to have them be a part of our daily lives.
My Project
Reading is the best part of our day in our Dual Language classroom. My students love reading especially when we integrate it within our humanities curriculum and are especially thrilled when they read books they have chosen. They also love our read-aloud time, where I choose a chapter book and read it out loud, and we have classroom discussions that match the topics we are learning about in Science and Social Studies. We also use many texts as mentor texts during our Spanish reading time, where we share a great book, and then refer back to it through the unit of study.
My Dual Language third graders need to hear, read, and explore high-quality picture books each and every day.
My students need to be able to locate and discuss the themes of books on a consistent basis, and they need to hear the fluent reading of the text. They need this shared experience. These books will become the foundation for our #bookaday program, pioneered Donalyn Miller and tailored to the classroom by Jillian Heise, where we as a class take 5-10 minutes daily to read a book, focus on its theme and share the reading experience. Our goal is to read 100+ picture books over the 2019-2020 school year.
