Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach English at a very special continuation high school where kids come because they might need a smaller setting, more one-on-one help, an alternative to traditional high school, or to get caught up with their credits towards graduation. Typically, kids opt to come here because they're looking for something different. As an English teacher, it's my job to help them hone their communication skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a different way.

Knowing my students are sometimes struggling and even resistant, I like to stock my library with books they have been wishing to read.

Early in the quarter, I have them complete a form where they tell me about a book they've been hoping to get their hands on for our in-class silent reading. If they're reading something they love, they're much more likely to see the book through to the end.

Reading has become a central part of our course studies and has had great effects on our students from helping them decompress from stressful situations to giving them a chance to engage with a text they really love. Thank you for your consideration in donating to our project!
