"Awakening the inner reader in every child" as described by author Donalyn Miller, helps children develop a love for reading!
My Sixth grade students are eager to learn and explore!
Together we explore the world of various literature genres and I give them time to read books they pick out themselves. I want them to be life long readers and open new worlds through fiction and non-fiction. I help them make connections and we engage in book talks within small groups or one-on-one. I model reading in the classroom as well.
At Our school, students are able to participate in "Battle of the Books" competition. They are involved in novel projects and complete an "Amusement Park Project" based on one of the novels they have read in Sixth Grade.
Students enjoy flex seating as well. They cherish a comfortable space for reading! In my classroom I provide books of various genres. I hope to be funded so I can provide flexible seating for reading!
My Project
My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! I would like to incorporate flex seating. Providing learning spaces is what I would like to use the new seating for in the classroom.
I would like to purchase comfortable seating with this project.
I have chosen a small sofa that will be perfect for our reading area. Providing flex-seating is an innovative way to engage students and improve academic performance in the classroom.
They need opportunities to read and learn in a non- traditional setting.
Students need to be in classrooms that inspire them. Spaces should promote creativity and an environment that provokes thought and allow time to explore. An example of promoting creativity is students reading in small groups. They might read plays where they each have a part. They also can have their own book talks. I like for students to share one-on-one with me about books they want me to read. Sometimes we read the same books and then have book discussions about the plot, characters, and conflicts in the story.
Students love to sit around the room and dive into a good books. Flex seating allows this idea to become reality. I want to inspire learning and reflect on the diversity of each learner in ELA!
