Book Trilogies to Hook Readers

My Students

I'm a lucky teacher that has a chance to teach in a variety of settings, but I spend most of my day co-teaching fourth and fifth-grade inclusion classes. Our students include both general and special education students, as well as a few gifted and talented students and English Language Learners. Our community is diverse, with kids coming from many different environments and homes. They bring with them different experiences that enhance our classroom. My colleagues and I strive to reach our students in innovative and engaging ways. We rely on authentic literature and inquiry-based learning lessons to engage our students. Our students are avid readers and love having access to additional books through our classroom library.

My Project

One of the greatest successes for a teacher is recommending a book to a student and having that student come back to ask for the next book in the series. Hooking a child with a great book collection helps them find the joy in following a character through multiple books. This project features several good graphic novel trilogies for our students. Zita the Spacegirl is a science fiction series featuring a brave heroine. Might Jack (of Jack and the Beanstalk fame) is a series following Jack on his life as a hero after the beanstalk falls. I also am trying a new series called Kid Beowulf - which reimages the epic poem into a child-friendly adventure led by a hero named Beowulf.

Students love to follow characters from book to book.

I've also requested copies of the books in the Hi-Lo series that are missing from my collection. Students love this series and its alien hero and are disappointed when they find a gap in the series. In addition, I've asked for bins to store our new books in and a few supporting books like Titanic, Proudest Blue, and Fever Year to support students' interest in these topics after reading popular novels featuring these historic events. Your support would be greatly appreciated and I know our students can't wait to read these books!
