I am truly blessed to have such responsible, eager learners. I want to be able to bless them in return with a fun, creative, and exciting project!
I would like to introduce my students to new literature in creative and inspiring ways.
I teach sixth grade reading and English Language Arts. It is really difficult to get reluctant readers excited about picking up a book in middle school. I want to provide my students with the opportunity to delve into new genres, introduce them to new authors, and give them unique ways to share their literary experiences.
My Project
A day will be set aside where my classroom will be transformed into a fine dining establishment, The Heimberg Cafe, where students will travel from table to table to sample various books and the foods mentioned within those books. The novels purchased will provide a wide variety of literature from which my students will choose for their quarterly requirement. As the students are reading, in addition to setting, characters, and conflict, they will jot down story components, themes, and list any foods mentioned in the book. After reading one of these young adult novels, the students will make "recipe cards" and book reviews for their novels. They will buy or make one food item mentioned in the book. Each student will make reservations to sample three different novels they have not read.
