My Students

The students with me in class are some of the best humans I know, even on their worst days. They invite difficult conversations, moving through them with empathy and attentiveness in ways that rival many adults.

Part of what I love so much about these students is their willingness to see beyond the text we're interacting with and compare it to their own lived experiences.

Because they can see themselves in the things we read, they can see the world.

My Project

This is the first year I've had to begin my classroom library anew, as I've previously shared books with other teachers. Hence, I'm attempting to build a classroom full with books that reflect all different kinds of reading in terms of medium as well as content.

Students request new reading material every day, especially new graphic novels, comics, and manga.

These visual texts are rife with entry points for analysis that will broaden our critical thinking skills and engage a variety of students.

There is great danger in the single story, the story that is one-dimensional, that is reflective of only one perspective. By incorporating a diverse array of texts, we push back on the idea that one voice is valid over another and push ourselves to open ourselves up to new thinking.
